In June 2016, Precious Garrett, a 34 year old mother and wife from Brooklyn, NY now living in South Carolina, along with her younger brother, went on a 6 days camping, trekking and swimming adventure through the Grand Canyon.
Precious has extensive traveling experience with four continents and nearly 30 countries under her belt. She is planning to travel all 7 continents and all 50 states in the United States. In November, she is set to visit her fifth continent: Antarctica and in January, her 6th Continent, Asia, to celebrate her 35th birthday.
Her last trip to the Grand Canyon was in fact her third visit there, as it is her favorite destination in the whole world so far. She has hiked, camped, visited the skywalk, whitewater rafted, swam in several waterfalls and taken two helicopter flights in the Grand Canyon.
Through The Wildland Trekking Company, Precious and her brother arranged a 3 days and 2 nights adventures; With their base camp being close to Hasavu Falls, they were able to go on day hikes and visit the Havasupai village, Hasavu Falls, Fifty Foot Falls, Mooney Falls, and Little Navajo Falls.
On the other days, they visited Sedona, Coconino National Forest, Glend Canyon Dam, Antelope Canyon and Horseshoe Bend.
On her favorite day of her Grand Canyon Trip.
Precious: My favorite day of the trip was the second day. Our trekking group did an exciting hike to Mooney falls. Our day started with a tasty warm breakfast and some of the best French pressed coffee I have ever had. We hiked through a lush green section within the canyon, waded through cool turquoise streams, and trekked down steep cliffs using ladders, rebar, and chains. It was exhilarating! A couple from our trekking group got engaged in front of Mooney falls. It was incredibly romantic and I felt honored to be able to witness the proposal. We joked, we laughed, we swam, and ate the delicious food prepared for us by our trekking guides. That night I stepped out of my tent and looked up at the sky and saw the Milky Way! I almost cried because I have always loved astronomy and one of my goals for the trip was to see and photograph the Milky Way. I happily grabbed my camera and captured a few shots.
On lessons learned on this Grand Canyon Trip.
Precious: While on this trip, I learned to confront some of my irrational fears. I consider myself an outdoorsy person, but I am not a fan of bugs or wild critters (caterpillars, lizards, squirrels, etc.). During the trip I slept in my tent alone near the creek and hiked around during the day and night without letting those fears get the best of me. With that said, I don’t think I will be getting a pet snake or lizard anytime soon.
On the importance of being adventurous and traveling.
Precious: I am always setting goals and working towards them. Sustaining healthy relationships, effectively partnering with my husband to parent our children, career development, maintaining my health, managing our finances, enjoying nature, photography, adventure, traveling, and even volunteering are all important parts of creating a happy and balanced life for me. I want to practice what I preach as best as I can, and model these behaviors for my daughters.
On being a mother, a wife and finding balance.
Precious: I work really hard to be an engaged wife and mother and I hope that I am truly catering to and meeting my family’s needs. Most of my travels are done with my family. Our 7 year old has visited almost a dozen other countries and our 2 year old is approaching half a dozen. When I travel without my immediate family, I travel efficiently by taking short trips. I am systematic in my planning which allows me to enjoy new experiences and return home as soon as possible. At this stage in my life these “mini-trips” allow me to enjoy travel and adventure while maintaining focus on my top priorities.
