As a teenager in Germany, Susi wanted to travel and live overseas. Whether it was work and travel, volunteer overseas, internships or language school programs, she literally had brochures from every single organizations offering such an opportunity.
Her parents once told her: “This is unrealistic sweetheart! We have normal lives! Finish school, get a job, save money, retire at 67 and then you can travel.” Not knowing anyone traveling long-term, besides the travel bloggers she looked up to and who seemed much braver than her, Susi grew up with those beliefs. Her dreams seemed impossible but never really let go of her.
After an ugly break up and a broken heart, she finally found the courage to walk away from Germany on January 4th, 2014, bought a one way ticket to Cape Town, and has never returned since.
Today, Susi works as a Transformational Coach and helps women, that are stuck on a path that isn’t their own, to create a freedom lifestyle of their own choosing. She has learned that there are many ways to live a freedom lifestyle and shares her knowledge with other women.
Susi’s Top 5 Most Memorable Adventures.
Susi: I always wanted to work with wild cats, so I volunteered in a cheetah rehabilitation project and wildlife hospital in South Africa. Getting close with cheetahs and leopards was a life changing experience. I have been working with animals ever since, but the purring of a happy cheetah is one of the most satisfying sound to my ears.
Whilst still in Africa, I worked at Zulu Waters Game Reserve, a wildlife reserve offering horse rides for safaris. I rode horses overlooking some of the most stunning sceneries in the world and observed rhinos with their new born babies.
In Asia my favorite adventure was a 4 day boat trip with TAO Expeditions to remote islands on the Philippines. On board of a typical philippino banka we stopped on remote islands without electricity or running water to sleep in wooden huts on untouched beaches.
Meeting the locals to play basketball, singing Karaoke or practicing slacklining between two palm trees in areas completely untouched by tourism, were unique and authentic adventures.
My favorite snorkel adventure was in Nusa Lembongan, close to Bali where you can not only swim with wild seaturtles, but also with Manta Rays. We took a fisher boat to Manta Ray Bay and jumped into the rough sea. It was a bit too rough for my own taste, as the waves and currents were pretty strong. But as soon as the first manta ray elegantly swam below me, I forgot everything around me and was completely in love with the smooth movement of the giant rays. It looked as if they were flying under water.
I have worked for free accommodation and food in a 5 star hotel on the beautiful Whitsunday Islands in Australia. Daily breathtaking scenery with whales crossing in the bay on a daily basis. I helped to clean up the tennis court, beach villas and helicopter pad to be part of the team and to live in paradise.
