Jamaica is known for its food, music, beautiful beaches and the laid back ‘yeah mon’ attitude! Four days may not seem like a lot of time to discover this beautiful island made up of four major cities: Montego Bay, Negril, Ochos Rios and Kingston, but it is definitely doable… I did it! I recommend doing Dunn River Falls and Dolphin Cove, Bob Marley birth home, Ricks Café and 7 miles beach and Blue Mountain National Park.
Dunn River Falls – Dunn River falls is one of Jamaica’s national treasures, located in Ochos Rios about one hour from Montego Bay. Climbing the fall is very popular amongst tourist and locals. It takes about 1 to 1.5 hours with the help of a local guide. The climb is not as easy as one may think but lots of fun. The cascading water is surrounded by lush, tropical plants and trees and provides lots of shade! Be prepared to get WET, so wear water shoes, comfortable clothing and a waterproof camera for those wonderful shots!
Dolphin Cove – Also located in Ochos Rios is a park surrounded by lush tropical jungle. It’s paradise on earth. There are plenty of activities from the hilarious shark show, swimming with the dolphins, touching sting rays, boat ride, feeding exotic birds, hiking and an onsite restaurant that serves authentic Jamaican food, while listening to a live reggae band! I recommend visiting Dunn River Falls and Dolphin Cove on the same day as they are located in close proximity (less than 5 minutes driving), but be prepared to be EXHAUSTED at the end of your day.
Bob Marley Birth Home – Who says Jamaica, says reggae, and who says Reggae, says Bob Marley. As a huge fan, I had to visit his birthplace, located in Nine Mile, Saint. Ann Parish, 1.5 hours from Montego Bay. The drive to his birth home and burial site is simply gorgeous. We drove on a mountainous and narrow road, each side filled with crops of bananas, avocadoes, sugar canes, sweet potatoes, yams. His presence is felt everywhere: from a live band that will play all of your favorite Bob Marley’s songs, to a museum recounting his life, his childhood home, and his and mother’s burial site. After your tour, you can relax, eat some good food on site and a little shopping!
Ricks Café in Negril – Located in Negril, Ricks Café is another fun hang out place, with a restaurant, live music, one of the most beautiful sunset I have ever seen and of course hundreds of locals and tourists who find the courage to jump from the cliffs into the crystalline water below. The highest platform jump is 35 feet… I was only courageous enough to jump off the 25 feet platform (I had help: two guys on either side of me)
Well that leaves day number 4 and I suggest making it a beach day! Doctor’s Cave Beach is located in downtown Montego Bay on the ‘hip strip’. The beach is a family friendly beach, not too crowded, with a bar and restaurant on site! You can snorkel or just decide to lounge and sip on a beverage of your choice!
